Jumby Bay attractions -not only sun & beach
Have you met the Turtle Team?" The surprising question might stump new arrivals at Jumby Bay, A Rosewood Resort, but not returning guests and island homeowners. The "Turtle Team" is field researchers from the University of Georgia who conduct the resort's internationally renowned study of endangered Hawksbill Turtles. Pasture Bay Beach on the island's Atlantic side is one of the world's primary nesting sites for these ancient reptiles that have inhabited waters around the island since pre-historic times. Jumby Bay guests get a spectacular view of the action. Since 1987, the 475-meter beach has been the site of a study of nesting activity conducted by the University of Georgia and funded by island homeowners. Each day from July through November, a team of researchers patrol the beach from dusk to dawn tagging turtles and searching for new nests and tracks in the sand. During this prime-nesting season, female turtles emerge from the sea to lay "clutches" of about 150 eggs in the sand. "It's like giving birth on the moon," note Turtle Team members. Guests on "turtle watch" are instantly informed of sighting, and head to the moonlit beach clad in anything from evening attire (with cocktails in hand) to pajamas to witness the wondrous event of turtles crawling onto the beach, clearing away rocks and vegetation, and digging deep holes in the sand. After falling into a trance which signals the beginning of the 30-minute nesting process, the female turtle then lays her clutch and proceeds to disguise the area with sand and leaves in an attempt to protect the eggs from their natural predators: man and mongoose. Dating back more than 60 million years, Hawksbill Turtles once inhabited the entire Antigua region and were a staple of the local diet. While the overdeveloped beaches of mainland Antigua are now completely depleted of nesting turtles, Pasture Bay Beach retains the natural vegetation and tranquility necessary for nesting. A living link to Jumby Bay's prehistoric past, residents are active participants in the protection of the Hawksbills, conducting off-season turtle patrols and occasionally fishing disoriented turtle hatchlings out of their pools and returning them to the beach. Guests are encouraged to sign up for the turtle watch with the concierge, and can designate a cut-off time for notification. |
